The Mystery of Pompeii

Italy is one of the world’s most stunning destinations for those who have an interest in history. Italy is without a doubt the best place in the world to see extraordinary examples of Renaissance art, and it is also the perfect destination for ancient relics. Many of these, such as the Colosseum, have been discussed in recent weeks, but there are also a number of amazing sites that are located outside the city of Rome, and will give travelers insight into the past. One of the ultimate historical sites in Italy is the city of Pompeii. Pompeii was a bustling and thriving part of the Roman Empire with nearly 20,000 inhabitants. Unfortunately for these inhabitants, Pompeii was a doomed city, and in 79 A.D., an eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius covered the city in ash. Centuries later, the result of the eruption is that the city has been nearly perfectly preserved. Most of the city is still intact and is easily viewed by visitors. Even pieces of art have been preserved through the years and can be seen in almost complete form today. Visitors who are looking for an adventure during their time in Italy will love Pompeii. Some of the most exciting sites to see in the city are the houses that have been preserved complete with their lavish decorations, such as the paintings in the Vettius House. Visit the Tomb of Vestoria Prisco for an eerie experience, or be amazed by the beauty of the Teatro Grande and the Forum Baths. During some parts of the year, visitors can even hike on Mount Vesuvius, or can instead visit the National Archeological Museum of Pompeii. The city of Pompeii is a vast destination that will keep the inquisitive traveler busy for hours. Spending a day at this world famous site is a unique way to experience the ancient world and will add yet another amazing experience to your Italian Vacation.
